"I learned more about the Feminist Majority's campaigns during my internship, but most importantly I was fortunate to join a team of diverse women working toward a common goal. I was inspired by their dedication and appreciated their encouragement, as I became more confident in my own leadership skills and found my own place in the feminist movement." - Elizabeth D. Arend, Summer 2001
Feminism & Leadership Internship
Summer 2008 interns

The Feminist Majority Foundation seeks highly motivated undergraduate students with an interest in the public policy and political science, particularly in areas concerning gender, human rights and development. Interns must demonstrate a strong academic record and preferably have a background in the feminist movement and/or feminist issues. Internships are available in our Washington, DC and Los Angeles offices.

The Feminist Majority Foundation, one of the nation's leading research and advocacy organizations for women's rights, develops creative long-term strategies and permanent solutions for the pervasive social, political, and economic obstacles facing women. Through educational and research projects the Feminist Majority Foundation seeks to transform the public debate on issues of importance to women's lives. The Foundation also publishes Ms. Magazine, with editorial offices in Los Angeles and publishing offices in the greater DC area.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

The Feminist Majority Foundaiton offers internships throughout the year in our Washington, DC and Los Angeles offices. Interns work full or part-time during the spring and fall semesters, or full-time during the summer. Full-time interns work 35-40 hours a week, while part-time interns must commit at least 20 hours per week. Regular office hours are 9:30-6:00 but interns may tailor their hours to fit school and work schedules. All who are interested are encouraged to apply.

Interns are an essential part of the Feminist Majority Foundation offices. They perform a wide variety of responsibilities, including monitoring press conferences and coalition meetings, researching information, attending rallies, and organizing events. Each intern works closely with a staff member in order to learn from direct hands on experience and contribute to substantive projects. Interns work in one or more of the following areas:

Choices Leadership Program - work with FMF's campus staff to launch pro-choice student groups on college campuses nationwide and conduct outreach to global women's studies programs. Work on current campus initiatives including: Emergency Contraception Campaign, Reproductive Rights Campaign, Get Out Her Vote, Young Women's Leadership Conferences, Violence Against Women Programs, and our Anti-Sweatshop Campaign.

Global Health and Rights - help research and mobilize a feminist constituency on US foreign policy including international family planning, violence against women, sweatshops, peace and the environment.

Feminist Majority Foundation Web Team - be a part of an award-winning web team. Plan, organize, and market FMF's website; research potential partnerships with other websites, participate in online discussions of feminist topics; learn marketable skills in DreamWeaver and Fireworks, and contribute new content to FMF sites. No prior web experience necessary.

Education Equity Program - work on new efforts to save Title IX, contribute to a national network to help educators increase gender equity, develop new FMF gender equity web pages, and help with collaborative research synthesis Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education.

Government Relations - work closely with FMF's Government relations director. Monitor congressional activity, research legislation and attend committee meetings on the Hill.

Ms. Magazine (LA Office) - help gather and fact-check information, work on specific office projects and participate in creating the magazine's National News section. This is a great opportunity to learn how the editorial side of a non-profit magazine operates -- from the inception of an idea to the final printed product -- and a great place to gain new feminist perspectives.

Limited Internship Opportunities available in the following programs:

Women's Health Research - a unique opportunity to work on the Feminist Majority Foundation's public education Campaign for Mifepristone. We are committed to expanding and enhancing women's health care research. In addition, interns will work on other global and national women's health issues with our medical director such as access to emergency contraception and illegal and unsafe abortion issues.

National Center for Women and Policing - a unique opportunity to contribute to a program working to increase the number of women in law enforcement and improve police response to domestic violence. Support the planning and administration of our annual leadership conference and perform research on police related issues, including police family violence and physical agility testing.

National Clinic Access Project - be a part of the nation's largest and oldest clinic defense team. Research and collect data on anti-abortion violence directed at health care workers and patients; monitor anti-abortion websites and literature.
